Gutter Cleaning
Cleared by hand, checked for flow, before they back up.
The method
Gutter cleaning starts with clearing the channel itself by hand: leaves, seed pods, granules, and other debris. Hand-clearing beats flushing from one end. A hose alone can push a clog further into a downspout instead of clearing it. Each downspout gets checked for blockages separately. A clogged downspout can leave a gutter run holding water even after the channel itself looks clear. Once the run is clear, water gets flushed through to confirm it. It needs to drain at the pace it's supposed to. It also needs to exit where the downspout is meant to discharge it, not over the side or through a seam.
Why it matters
A gutter's entire job is to carry roof runoff away from the fascia, siding, and foundation. Otherwise, it sheets down the side of the house. When the channel is clogged, water backs up and overflows at the roofline instead. That puts standing moisture against the fascia board, which can eventually rot it. It also sends water down the siding, pooling at the foundation instead of away from it. Once temperatures drop below freezing, standing water in a clogged gutter is the starting point for an ice dam. Melted snow refreezes at the gutter line and builds up. That ice can back water up under the shingle edge above it. Clearing gutters before the debris load peaks is what prevents both problems from starting.
What to expect
Every run gets cleared, not just the sections visible from the ground. Debris tends to collect unevenly. It's often worse near valleys, dormers, and anywhere two roof planes meet and funnel extra water and grit into one stretch of gutter. Loose brackets, sagging sections, and separated seams are a different kind of damage. They can show up during a cleaning, even though they're a separate issue from the debris itself. They get flagged when found. Gutters are installed with a slight pitch toward the downspout. That slope is what actually moves the water. So a run that looks clear but still holds standing water usually has a pitch or blockage problem, not a cleaning problem.
Questions
Questions about gutter cleaning
How do I know if my gutters are clogged?
Visible signs include water spilling over the side during rain, and staining or streaking on the fascia board below the gutter. Plants or moss growing in the channel itself is another sign. So is a sagging or pulled-away section, visible from the ground.
Why clear gutters by hand instead of just hosing them out?
A hose alone can push debris further into a downspout instead of clearing it. Clearing the channel by hand first, then flushing to confirm drainage, catches blockages a hose-only approach would miss.
What causes ice dams?
Standing water in a clogged gutter freezes when temperatures drop. Repeated freeze and thaw cycles build up ice at the roofline. That ice can back water up under the shingle edge above it. That's why clear gutters matter heading into winter.
How often do gutters need to be cleaned?
It depends heavily on the tree cover around the property. Homes under heavy tree cover typically need more frequent attention than homes with little overhanging foliage. Leaf and seed litter is the main driver of clogs.
