Window Cleaning

Streak-free glass, done in the same visit as everything else.

The method

Exterior window cleaning generally follows the same sequence, regardless of the house. Screens come off where they're accessible, so the frame and screen mesh can both get cleaned properly instead of washing around them. The glass gets washed with a cleaning solution to loosen dust, pollen, and grime. Then a squeegee does the actual streak-free work. A squeegee, not a cloth, is what leaves glass streak-free. A cloth tends to redistribute water and leave lint or fibers behind as it dries. A squeegee's rubber blade pulls water off the glass in a single clean pass instead. The frame and sill get wiped down after the glass. The track gets cleared of grit last, the part most people never clean themselves.

Why it matters

Window tracks collect the same fine grit, pollen, and dust that accumulates on siding and roofing. But a track traps it, instead of letting rain rinse it away. A track is a channel, not an open surface. Left alone, that debris builds up and holds moisture. Eventually it works into the weatherstripping and seals that keep the window airtight. Those seals wear faster as a result. It also makes the window physically harder to slide open and closed over time. Grit in the track acts like sandpaper on the frame, every time the sash moves through it.

What to expect

Exterior glass is the standard scope for a window cleaning visit. That means the outside face of the glass, the frame, and the track. Interior glass is a different scope. It requires access inside the home, room by room, rather than working the exterior from the ground or a ladder. A window that needs interior attention gets noted rather than assumed. Streaking after a cleaning is usually one of two things. One is hard water spots, from mineral deposits in the rinse water drying on the glass before it's squeegeed. The other is a missed pass at the edge, where the blade didn't fully clear the corner.

Questions

Questions about window cleaning

Why use a squeegee instead of a cloth?

A squeegee pulls water off the glass in one clean pass. A cloth tends to redistribute water instead, and can leave lint or fibers behind as it dries. That's the main reason squeegee work looks streak-free and cloth-only cleaning often doesn't.

What causes streaks even after a window is cleaned?

Streaking is usually hard water spots, from mineral deposits drying on the glass before the squeegee clears them. The other cause is a missed pass at an edge or corner.

Do you clean interior glass too?

Exterior glass is the standard scope for a window cleaning visit. Interior glass requires access inside the home, room by room. That's a different scope, so it gets noted separately rather than assumed.

Why does track cleaning matter if the glass already looks clean?

Grit and debris that collect in the track don't rinse away the way they do on an open surface. Left alone, that buildup can work into the weatherstripping and make the window harder to slide.
